Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year. Its gardens were the envy of the north.
But in 1957 the castle was demolished. Just the façade and outer walls remained standing and for over half a century, the place was empty – home only to chickens, pigs and the odd bat.
The gardens were lost to wilderness.
Today Lowther Castle is one of the most intriguing visitor attractions in the country. Dramatic Ruins, Lost Gardens, Exhibition area and seasonal activities plus a large newly refurbished Adventure playground to rival the best in the land. We look forward to welcoming you.
A fantastic place to walk, cycle and explore

Somewhere that would be particularly popular with younger visitors -
Abbott Lodge, near Penrith, Cumbria is a working dairy farm set in spectacular scenery of the Eden Valley midway between the Pennines and the Northern Lake District. The farm produces over 40 flavours of high quality homemade Jersey ice cream. Environmentally aware we use compostable tubs & spoons, sell our pasteurised milk in glass bottles and we are trying to reduce single use plastic.
The farm was restocked with Jersey cattle in February 2002 following foot and mouth in 2001. The cows are milked by robot and are free to choose when they eat, lie down and get milked. We have a pond on the farm and have planted 2.5 miles of hedges as we look after the environment for the next generation.
Kids just love it at Abbott Lodge. Apart from the obvious attraction of our ice cream, they can play on our outdoor play area.
And if the weather's a bit wet, don't worry we have an indoor play area to keep the kids entertained!
Don't forget we have a ride on tractor circuit for children under 8.
